Tip: Using a mask to make a complex selection

Let's face it. Selecting a complex area can be a drag. Why not let Photoshop do most of the work for you. Colin Smith shows you how in this tutorial in which he uses the Color Range command to make an initial selection, creates an alpha channel that acts as a mask, and fine tunes the mask with a Levels adjustment and some black paint. Nice work.
