1. I'd love to play and watch your 'cast, but I have no software that responds to your m4v file. Is this a proprietary format?

I am using a PC, Windows XP SP2, and until today thought I had every necessary codec.

3. Thanks Jan for your informative, inaugural video podcast. The topic was interesting for those who wish to understand document resolution as it relates to printing to home printers.

My only suggestion to round out the podcast ... it would have been great to hear what you thought the suggested resolution ranges would be for other common outputs - such as computer screen viewing (website images or to embed into PDF files) and for sending to print shops (like Kinkos).

For those of you having trouble viewing - remember, the file format Jan used is .m4v - so load up in iTunes and it plays fine.

Nice first attempt at a video podcast.

But let's talk about some of the technical issues you've brought up in this first episode:

- The Image Size indicator in the New File dialog is the size of the image as it lives in RAM, _not_ the size of the image on disk. When saved in Photoshop format, RLE compression is normally appplied to an image, resulting in smaller file sizes than indicated in the new File dialog.

- The notion of resolution is really about a function : the density of pixels per _square inch_. When a larger number of pixels fit into a specific physical size, we say that the resolution of that image has been increased. The idea of Resolution in Photoshop is completely independent of the peinting methodology - Photoshop does not know how you plan on outputting your file, it just knows you want it to build on image with a specific pixel density.

- The idea of printing needs to be broken out into the type of technology deployed by the printer. The one-to-one resolution issues encountered in an inkjet printer are not the same issues one runs into when preparing images for color separated printing, in which the screening process and screen density present a completely different set of parameters for optimum source file resolution. The long accepted formula for Photoshop is to take the screen density of the printing method and multiply it times 2, which gives you the optimum source image resolution. Of course, this brings up...

- Print size. If you plan on printing an image at the same physical size of the source scan, that's great, but this all gets much more involved if you plan on scaling the image up at print time.

Your explanation of resulution is indeed basic, and might have been a bit clearer if you had clicked on the size indicator in the lower left side of the image window _without_ holding down the Alt/Option key, so your audience could see the actual physical print size on the selected output size in Page Setup. Increase image resolution, and click on this indicator again, and witness how the print size got smaller, while the actual data size remains the same.

I've been explaining resolution issues to Photoshop users for over 15 years, and want to make sure that everyone is on the same page. it's a confusing topic, and crucial for ALL Photoshoppers.
