Photoshopped composite of Brangelina family could be worth big bucks

You may be surprised at the lengths paparazzi will go to get one of the first "photos" of Brad and Angela's expected baby. According to New York Magazine, an early photo of the Brangelina baby could fetch as much as $50,000, so there's lots of incentive for paparazzi to be first on the scene.

But things may not be as they appear. This image, published in the New York Magazine article, isn't the real thing. "Angelina" is a computer composite, and her hubby is an actor playing the real Brad. Hmm, don't you wonder how much a Photoshopped image like this one might go for?

Create a faux 3D illustration in Photoshop

There's an interesting-sounding, relatively new Photoshop book on the market--CS2 for Advertising and Marketing: Secrets from an Entertainment Advertising Insider by Daniel Sorenson. I haven't had a chance to review the book, but I can recommend an online, three-part tutorial by Sorenson on creating a 3D illustration in Photoshop.

Although Photoshop doesn't offer the features you'll find in a real 3D program, Sorenson shows you how to use Photoshop to simulate a 3D scene. He achieves convincing results using Shape layers, layer styles, patterns, gradients, and brush work. I find that tutorials like this one, that pull together multiple Photoshop features and techniques to create an entire image, are valuable learning tools. It will be worth your while to walk through the steps of creating this scene with Sorenson. You'll find all three parts of this tutorial at the Layers Magazine web site.

Adobe Proxy Magazine Vol. 2 No. 1 has landed

Adobe Proxy is a slick quarterly interactive design magazine (PDF) I wish they'd publish more often. If you aren't familiar, check out our other posts on past issues to get a feel, or simply dig right in, you really can't go wrong.

This latest issue packs a Photoshop Vanishing Point filter tutorial, rendering delay improvements in the Production Studio suite, tips on converting InDesign projects into websites with GoLive, an interview with Alex Gelman on his Japanese design interests, tips on type and more.

You can head over and download past and current issues, as well as sign up for email notifications of the next issue.

Designtimes, South Africa's creative resource

Designtimes is a small design publication I just caught wind of in a recent iStockphoto newsletter. From their site:

"Designtimes is a niche design driven newspaper. Each month we feature profiles on local or international designers, photographers, animators, illustrators, multimedia companies, interviews with professionals and young local artists or designers."

While the magazine hails from South Africa and gives some face time to local designers (which I personally find an interesting opportunity), it isn't at the expensive of covering the international design conversation. The print version has a limited run of 2000 copies at a cost of $17 USD, while PDF copies are also available from iStockphoto at a cost of 2-3 credits per issue, which can work out to around $1 or less, depending on if you buy credits in bulk.

I haven't picked up an issue yet, but if any of you TUPW readers have already checked out Designtimes, please share your thoughts.
